Sometimes the need in developing nations is so dire we can easily forget that American people are struggling as well.Hartman House initiatives in the United States are simple: to prevent hunger and hopelessness. No individual with the resources made available in America should ever have to struggle with hunger. With the many opportunities present in such a country, no American should ever face the feeling of hopelessness.
How do we prevent hunger you ask? Every year we put on a Thanksgiving Harvest where we provide underprivileged families with a frozen turkey and every Thanksgiving fixing you can think of. With these meals, hundreds of individuals are able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner from the comfort of their own home and receive a helping hand in their time of need. Currently, our Thanksgiving Harvest takes place in Texas, but we plan to travel to wherever these meals are needed most!

Hartman House is also a huge contributor to various non-profit organizations within the inner Los Angeles area. We have donated to various causes including sponsoring events to prevent Human Trafficking, providing hundreds of bikes for inner-city kids in downtown L.A., supporting back to school programs, filling 2500 backpacks with school supplies, donating to charity Christmas events and so on. It is just as important for us to do our part right here in our own back yard!

Hartman House has deep set roots in Haiti. For one, Haiti is the reason Hartman House was formed in 2005 by founders Butch and Julieann Hartman. After the recent tragedy having taken place in Haiti, aid is needed now more than ever. Hartman House has travelled to Haiti twice and having seen firsthand how poor and ravaged this country was before the earthquake – well, we can’t even imagine what it must be like now.
Prior to the quake, rampant crime and poverty were everywhere. A great deal of the populace is either unemployed or unemployable. The water is filthy and there are mounds of uncollected garbage as far as the eye can see. Packs of dogs howl all night. Not at the moon, but because they are hungry.

Eleanor “Mom” Workman

Hartman House has teamed with a marvelous organization known as the Christian Haitian Outreach, located in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This organization owns and operates orphanages in Haiti. The orphanage is managed by a woman named Eleanor “Mom” Workman, a 91 year old African American from the U.S. She first founded the Christian Haitian Outreach Orphanage (CHO) in response to do what she felt God called her to do. Packing up all she had, she moved from Los Angeles to Haiti over 30 years ago and, right away, took in her first charge of 10 orphaned children. These 10 babies were considered to be “Non-thrivers”. Hard as it was to deal with orphaned children in a place like Haiti, Mom had another difficulty to face: each one of the children was scheduled to die within three weeks of her receiving them. Despite the Haitian doctor’s plea for her to “just give up” Mom did not listen to him. She listened to God. She took in every single one of those children and, not only did they beat their given odds of survival, they’re now all grown up and many of them are helping her run the orphanage!

It’s difficult enough being an adult and living in a place like this, but just imagine if you were a child living there. To make matters worse, imagine you were an orphaned child and had no place to live but on the garbage-littered, disease-covered streets.

Mom is certainly one hard-working woman; and the orphanage is still going strong. Of course, in Haiti, “strong” is a relative term. The orphanage is in constant need of funding just to pay for the everyday basics: repairs, water, sanitation, beds, food, clothing, etc. Hartman House provided the necessary money to get several large cargo containers – containing desperately needed supplies – out of the hands of the Haitian Customs Officials and to the orphanage. There were 5 containers, each one costing $2500.00 to remove. Also, in June of 2006, Hartman House was able to secure the money necessary to pay for the orphanage’s brand new water supply system. Compared to the disease ridden water before, Mom has assured us that “clean water is flowing every day!” The orphanage is currently housing many children and the number is increasing every year.

It is our intent to provide funding to this exceptionally worthy cause for as long as there is need.

Now with this most recent national disaster in Haiti we are needed now more than ever. Every donation made will be sent directly to CHO to help rebuild the orphanage just outside of Port-Au-Prince.

It was nearly 4 a.m. and the Hartman House team had just touched down at the La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City. Our team was headed to present an eagerly awaiting family with a new home. A shuttle pulled up so we began loading our luggage and the seven wheelchairs we brought with us. Not even leaving the airport grounds, Juan Bonilla, Hartman House Committee Chair, turned around and spotted a man on a skateboard. The man had no legs, was selling pencils to make a living, and had tied himself to the skateboard to get around. We immediately unloaded a wheelchair as Juan approached the man and told him “I’m going to make your day.” The man looked up as Juan continued “We have a wheelchair for you, do you want it?” At once the man began crying and simply replied “Yes.” A small crowd began to form as Juan picked him up and placed him in his new wheelchair. A woman nearby translated his words as he cried “This is the best day of my life. I always prayed that I would get a wheelchair one day!”
Hartman House focuses on three primary initiatives in Guatemala:

Building Homes
Donating Wheelchairs & Walkers
Supplying Food & Clothing

THE FACTS

Among the ten poorest countries in Latin America, over half the population in Guatemala lives in poverty. Guatemala’s income distribution is among the most unequal in the world. As a result, the mass 75% of the population is pushed to the outskirts of the land and forced to make ends meet in highly undeveloped lands. All of this accumulates to even bigger problems with the lack of proper health care, horrible living conditions, minimum access to good land, and unequal disbursements of wealth. Hundreds of thousands of poor rural workers are trapped in a poverty net where, no matter how hard they work, it is nearly impossible to improve their financial situations and provide for their families. With a need of 1.6 million houses, many Guatemalans live in self-made shacks and overly crowded rooms with no gas, electricity, or running water.

HOW WE HELP

Build Homes: This is where we come in. Hartman House’s objective in Guatemala is to build as many homes for disadvantaged families as possible. With a home these families can send their children to school rather than having to go work, and by work we mean, having them sell random items on the streets daily. Children are also found to work within these five industries, including firecracker production, domestic services in private homes, agricultural work, mining & quarrying, and garbage picking – all very dangerous and physically waring jobs for a child.

Homes cost anywhere from $10,000-$15,000 based on the size of the family and areas in which they must be built. The homes are built to last, made of cinder block, fully furnished, and supplied with a working bathroom, electricity, and gas. It truly is a life changing experience for the families and one in which many have never dreamed of.

Donate Wheelchairs & Walkers: In Guatemala, the disabled are basically placed in a corner and forgotten. Health care in the country is very poor with more than 40% of the population having no access to it. One way we are working to solve this problem is by providing immediate assistance through wheelchair and walker giveaways. Sometimes it takes hours of driving and miles of walking to reach the wheelchair recipients. There is no way of contacting these individuals other than through word of mouth, so it is always a huge surprise when we arrive. When you are sitting in your house thinking it is going to be another day of not walking, not being able to go outside, and having to sit in the same position all day, there is nothing more joyous than the arrival of several strangers there to encourage and bless you with a wheelchair.

Do you have a used wheelchair or walker that you no longer use? Donate it to Hartman House.

Food & Clothing Giveaway: Every time we make a trip to Guatemala we always come fully equipped with clothing and food. We purchase the food while in the country and package as many meals as we can to give to the people. Our team finds a central location where the families can find us. Some must walk for miles, the majority of them being mothers, grandmothers and children. People line up hours ahead of time just to retrieve one bag of food and some clothes for their children. Whether the kids are receiving a pair of socks or a comb, they treat every item as if it were gold. Being able to supply these families with food and clothes is a great outreach. Help us continue to feed and clothe families in Guatemala. Every little bit helps.

$5 can feed an entire family in Guatemala.

Everyday people in Africa are fighting to survive. When Hartman House first traveled to Uganda, Africa we were overwhelmed by the amount of poverty in the country. Sure money would help, but only for a short period of time. And then what? We wanted to change the lives of those in Africa on a grand scale, and this could only be accomplished in one way. Hartman House’s sole mission is to bring education to the children of Africa.

Approximately 40% of Africans over the age of 15, and 50% of women above the age of 25 are illiterate.
School enrollment in Africa is among the lowest in the world. In Uganda, a child who doesn’t complete their basic education is 3 times more likely to become HIV positive than a child who does.

With an educated country comes an advanced generation. And with an advanced generation comes economic growth.

Hartman House is working hard to build our very first school in Uganda, Africa. It’s called the Hartman House School of Destiny. Join us.

Spread the Word
Hartman House works in both the U.S. and developing nations. Many of the situations we encounter are distressful, but once exposed to the need in those areas we make it our mission to aid those in need. If more people were exposed to these real life situations taking place in our day maybe they would feel compelled to lend a helping hand as well. This is where you come in…
We can only do so much, but one by one YOU – our followers – can help us raise awareness amongst the masses. Sometimes being bombarded by numbers and statistics is not the best method, which is why we combine the facts with real life stories. Go through some of our site, copy and paste, bring some of these stories up in conversation and let your friends know what is taking place in the world around them.

Ways to spread awareness:

Glance through our Media Center.
Join our social media sites.
Talk about Hartman House in your blogs, websites, and daily devotions.
Download banners, icons, backgrounds, and images to post on your sites.
Join our mailing list and invite others.
Shop with us and raise awareness by wearing Hartman House merchandise.
Request a Speaker for your events.
Simply tell a friend.

Remember all it takes is one voice and that voice can be you.

You can host an event to raise money for Hartman House projects. Prior to planning your event, you must register your function with Hartman House by sending an email to felicia@hartmanhousefoundation.org . Below are some ideas to begin with:
Throw A Party:
What better excuse to get dressed up and have a night out on the town? Everyone wants a reason to go out so why not have you and your friends party for a cause? Whether it be a club event or intimate gathering at your residence, throwing a party is an effective way to raise funds. With social media, the work is all done for you and invitations can be sent to all of your friends within seconds. Many businesses and venues are willing to split the costs with you for a charity event. If you choose to host a party at your residence, inform your friends that you will be requesting donations, charging a small cover fee at the door, or even a fee for a specialty service of your choice. For more ideas or information, please contact Hartman House.

Movie Night:
We all enjoy a good movie. Hosting a movie night is a cost-effective way to raise funds for Hartman House, while having fun. Have a theme for the evening, whether it be old Hollywood films, horror films, or your all too favorite chick-flicks will gather a crowd quickly. Let your friends know this is a night for charity. You can get your donations by creating your own concession stand with your favorite goodies or by selling movie tickets for the night.

Car Wash:
Gather your family and friends to host a car wash. Find a local business willing to donate their parking lot for the day. Download the Hartman House logo for local traffic to see as they drive by. Even post flyers around town informing the community that you will be hosting a car wash to raise funds for our non-profit.

Yard Sale:
Many of us have miscellaneous goods that we no longer use, but would be of value to others. Host a local yard sale. Inform your customers that their purchase will be donated to the Hartman House Foundation whether it is towards a home in Guatemala or to feed a family here in the states.

Barbeque:
It is a beautiful day, the sun is shining bright, and you are ready to host a barbeque. With all of your friends bringing their favorite dish it is a great way to spend the weekend over delicious food for a great cause. Inform your local grocery stores and businesses about this event acknowledging that it is for a Hartman House a certified 501c3 non-profit and any food, drinks, or paper goods donated from them will be tax deductible. Each guest can donate upon entry or for their dish or just place a tip jar beside the chef!

Game Night:
Make a list of your favorite group games to play with your friends. Whether it is monopoly or Halo who wouldn’t pay to play? Tell your friends to invite their friends, the more the merrier. Make small flyers or an invitation online to let everyone know this is a charitable event.

Bake Sale:
This is a great way to raise money, because it requires little to no cost on your behalf. Get out your baking sheet and get started on those delicious cookies, cakes, and scones. Find a local church, school, or business willing to donate their facility for your use. You will need help, ask those around you to donate their best baked goods. To get the most out of your sales, inform your customers that their purchase will be donated to Hartman House for a charitable cause.

Auction:
Do you have connections? Do you have access to valuable items that others would be willing to pay for? Well an online or silent auction sounds like the perfect fit for you. These auctions are some of the best ways to raise big money fast for a charitable cause. Bidders will pay more attention to your items knowing that the proceeds will help Hartman House further their mission.

Dinner:
Whether a large group or an intimate circle, a dinner party is a classic opportunity to entertain your closest friends. Set up a donation table where your guests can find out what they are donating towards and a little more about Hartman House. Please contact Hartman House for press kits to share at your given function.

Fundraiser:
The sky is the limit and it is left to your imagination as to how you will fundraise for Hartman House. You can host a live fundraiser by creating an actual event to raise funds from a fashion show to a walk-a-thon. Even better, join our FirstGiving online fundraising page where you can be as creative as you want. You can walk, run, hike, or bike or give a day, whether it is your birthday, anniversary, or bar-mitzvah, everyone will jump on board to support you in your cause.
